What is the Pain Unit?

The pain is the most frequent cause of consultation to the doctor.
The treatment of pain is a relatively new specialty in our country.
Most of the public and private Hospitals have specialists in treatment of the pain and every day we find more persons who, on having known its existence, come to our Clinics to relieve its ailments, well recounted by other specialists or by proper decision, although still there exists enough ignorance of the treatments that we perform and the type of pain that we can treat.

What cases do we attend in the Pain Clinic?

Many of the patients who come for the first time, come scared because they believe that only we treat the cases of untreatable illnesses, and that the treatments are based on the use of morphine and derivatives.
This idea is distant enough of the reality.
The Pain Management Units attend mostly patients with pain related to the skeletal muscle, as back pain and sciatica, neck pain, muscle pain or fibromyalgia.
Another type of pain that we treat frequently is the neuropathic pain, which is caused by damage of the nerves, such as trigeminal neuralgia, post herpetic neuralgia, Suddeck syndrome also called complex regional painful syndrome and the migraines.
The patients with oncological pain also are an important part of our Clinics.
During the first visit to the Doctor, the patient receives a medical history with a physical examination, which is the the base of the diagnosis.
If it is necessary, radiological complementary tests are requested such as Magnetic Resonance, CAT scan or blood tests, among others.
After we gather all the information, then we establish a plan of treatment that is explained to the patient.
The treatment is usually coordinated with other specialists, since our Unit is Multidisciplinary, that means that we consult the opinions of the neurologist, neurosurgeon, orthopedic surgeon and oncologist, depending on the cause of the pain, in addition to the psychological support.
There exists also a Center of Rehabilitation and Physical therapy associated with the Unit.
